| Lucas didn't think anything special was going to happen to him when he woke up this morning, but boy was he wrong. He had no idea what awaited for him when he walked into his Muggle Studies class for the day. He was listening and able to comprehend all the material that the professor was discussing and before he knew it, class was over, but not without one last word from the professor: him and the rest of his classmates were to be paired off for a group project. Lucas was not happy in the slightest, and he was ready to protest, but the professor was ready, for with a flick of the wand, the names of the group pairings were written on the board. After looking around for his name, he finally found it and saw he was paired with Lexie Raine, a fifth year Hufflepuff. He had shared a couple of classes with her throughout his years at Hogwarts, so he was familiar with her, but he probably only said one word to her over the course of the five years he had known her.
Groaning internally, Lucas decided to just suck it up for now and just try his best to get a perfect grade. So, after he had some time, he owled the Hufflepuff to meet him in the spare classroom on the fifth floor, just so he was sure that there wouldn't be any distractions. He chose the spare classroom because do to being a muggle-born, he knew that the assignment that was presented wouldn't come off as a challenge to him, so he didn't need the resources of the library. If she needed more assistance and wanted to use the library, then she would have to go on her own time, not Lucas'.
As he waited for the girl, he started to think of options for their assignment. The assignment was to describe and present how adapting to doing activities with no magic could be a positive rather than a negative. Lucas only had to think about it for a second before he already had an idea on what he wanted to write his project on. Though he would listen to an idea or two from Lexie (if she had one), he was still try to convert her to his idea if she didn't agree, since he thought his idea was perfect for this project. He never settled for anything less than perfect.

In the morning, she had found a quill she had believed to have lost a few weeks ago. Later on, during potions, she had received a nod from Snape, which had never happened before. In Muggle Studies they were given a group project to work on. Sure, she’d had to work in groups before in class, but it was very rare to have to do outside work with someone not in her house. Not that she minded, it gave her a chance to get out of her room. The next surprise came a few hours later when a tawny owl flew into her room, a note tied to its leg. She had begun thinking about the project, but she was surprised her partner wanted to start on it right away. Most students usually procrastinated. [break][break]
Lexie hated being late for anything. Class, meetings, locations, events. If a time was given to her she was likely to show up early. Which is why she found herself in front of the Spare Classroom on the fifth floor six minutes before the meeting time. She had wanted to be here a bit earlier, but the walk here had taken slightly longer due to her helping a young girl pick up a stack of items she had dropped. [break][break]
She pulled the door open, her eyes gazing through the room trying to figure out the perfect spot for them to work. There was another surprise waiting inside. She most definitely did not expect someone to be already there, she was usually the first one to places. [break][break]
"Oh hi there Lucas!” she chirped recalling his name from the board in class. She walked the short distance around desks to where he was sitting. She set her things gently on the empty seat near her and set her desk up ready to jot down ideas and plans. She wasn’t too worried about the project, growing up not knowing about magic definitely had its advantages. [break][break]
”It’s a little earlier than planned but… guess we should get started then?” she suggested, a small smile on her lips.

| Lucas looked up when he heard someone entering the classroom and was shocked that it was Lexie. Well, he wasn't all that shocked that it was her, but he was shocked that she here early. Whenever he was paired up with someone, the other person usually ran late, causing him to grow irritated. However, this girl actually came six minutes early, which was a small good sign for Lucas. A girl who actually takes her school work seriously who isn't in Ravenclaw... That's something you don't see often. He thought, already a little impressed by the Hufflepuff and it grew when he saw that she actually came prepared. She put down all her materials and Lucas couldn't help but feel a small smirk creep up to his lips. This was definitely a sign that this project was going to run just how he wanted.
When she suggested to start, Lucas cleared his throat and nodded. "Yes, that would be the best idea." He agreed before getting his quill ready. "I think the first thing we should do is come up with an idea for this project. I already have an idea, but if you have any, you should say yours first before I reveal mine." Lucas usually did this as a test to see if the person he was working with was stupid or not. He judged it in two ways: if the person just wanted him to decide on the idea and if the person actually came up with a stupid idea. If the person wanted him to come up with the idea and didn't have any ideas, he knew it was because they wanted to do as little work as possible, which annoyed him, and if the person came up with a stupid idea, like an obvious idea, then it would annoy him even more because he felt like they weren't even trying. So, he was eager to hear what Lexie had to say, since this would be the determining factor on how well this pairing would be.

She had heard… things about the Ravenclaw she had been paired with. Not all of them where good, actually most of the things weren’t good. He was known as a perfectionist, who was known to do whatever it took to get the perfect grade even if meant controlling everyone and everything. To her, it seemed strange that he was allowing her to even contribute ideas. As cute as she thought he was, she had prepared herself to interject herself so she could actually be part of this project.[break][break]
"Well….” she began, trying to figure out how to best phrase it without sounding like she was rambling on. "Magic makes everything easy. It’s like say the spell, wave your arm, and poof you’re all done. “ she stated waving her quill around for emphasis. "But without magic, you have to actually put the work in, you have to get your hands dirty, sweat and at the end even though you’re tired it’s something you did all on your own.”[break][break]
"You get that sense of pride of doing something perfect with your own two hands and that’s something you can’t get with magic.” she concluded a smile spreading on her face. Magic had definitely made things easier for the girl, but more often than not she still preferred to pick up her own stuff from the floor, or to look something instead of using ’Accio’ it made her feel good when she did stuff on her own.[break][break]
”Sorry, didn’t mean to just go off like that.” she chuckled. ”What do you think about the idea? I know you said you had an idea so we can discuss it after you say yours.”

Lucas actually couldn't believe what he was hearing; he was floored. When arriving here, Lucas assumed Lexie would come with a stupid and obvious idea, but boy was he wrong. Not only did she come with an idea that was great, hell, even perfect, but it was his idea too! He knew that the Hufflepuff didn't steal his idea, for he never mentioned or shared it to her, which made him even more impressed with her. It seemed like she actually cared about the assignment and how well they did on it, which was way better than most of the people at this school. Wait... did she look this cute when she stepped into this classroom? Lucas couldn't tell. Though he wouldn't admit it, Lucas knew that the reason she looked different to him was because he barely even looked at her when she entered. In fact, he barely even noticed what she looked liked because all he wanted to do was finish the project and get it over with. However, now that she surprised him, he was actually able to get a good look at her and he was not disappointed, but still. He couldn't allow himself to think like that. He needed to focus on his work. When she asked what his idea was, he cleared this throat to collect himself. "Well, believe it or not, I had the exact same idea." He admitted. "So, I am actually impressed that you had the same idea, because a lot of students in this school would usually try to have me come up with the ideas so they could do less work. And for that, I am certainly glad I am paired up with you instead of those morons." He said truthfully. Though Lucas was a proud man, he knew when respect was earned, and at this moment, Lexie earned hers.

WE ARE SEARCHLIGHTS, WE CAN SEE IN THE DARK Lexie was having a hard time hiding the surprise on her face this time around. She wasn’t expecting to have the same idea as Lucas. How was it that two people could share the same thing, two people who up to this moment had very little to non-existing interaction before. It was strange but she kind of liked it. She’d never had that before, usually there is always some sort of debate with ideas that they can never agree on.
"Thanks." she beamed a light blush crossing her cheeks, she was enjoying his praise. She most definitely did not consider herself the smartest person around, she had to work hard to get the great grades she had. They were not perfect, but they were based on her hard work."I’ve definitely had my share of partners that did not do their fair of work. It annoys me to no end." she said honestly. Lexie had always thought of herself as a patient person, but there were some things that just irked her. People basically expecting others to do everything for them or expecting life on a silver platter were the worst.
The brunette hummed, "Music? I would not have expected that. I’ve noticed you around and you always seem to be studying." she said. "N-n- not that you doing music is bad or anything. I bet you make good music." she spluttered, trying and failing to keep the heat from rising in her face. Oh how she wished she could hide herself. She did not mean to imply that he would make terrible music since it was such an unexpected thing. She also did not mean to imply that she was staring at him. Honestly, she didn’t know which one embarrassed her more.
”I think music is a good angle to tackle this.” she continued quickly, ”Even here in the wizarding world I’m assuming they have to write their own music. Like The Weird Sisters.” she concluded thinking about last year’s Yule ball.

Lucas was an incredibly observant person, so her blush didn't go unnoticed by him. In fact, he actually thought her blushing was pretty cute. It just accented her face so well and he couldn't help but want to see it again. But why was he even thinking like this? Just five minutes ago, she was kind of an annoyance, but now, all of sudden, he couldn't stop thinking about how pretty she looked and how great she made her uniform look. Usually, yellow and black just screamed tacky, but for some reason, to Lucas, Lexie was pulling it off. In fact, she looked great. Her hair, though a bit messy (probably from a day's worth of classes), was styled so nicely. And her face had the clearest of skin; he just wanted to caress it with his fingers. Wait... were her eyes that beautiful a minute ago? Because now it felt like he couldn't stop looking at them. She was just so-- Lucas shook his head once again, trying to erase all the thoughts of her being cute. He couldn't focus on that. He had an assignment to do and he didn't need this distracting him from getting the perfect grade he rightfully deserved. So, when she thanked him, all he did was nod in response. He needed to stay focused. "Honestly, some of these students think just because they came from wizarding families that can just do whatever they want." Lucas commented somewhat bitterly. The whole reason he always pushed himself so hard was because he wanted to show the other students, especially the ones who belittled him for being muggle-born, that he could do anything they could, but twice as better. He had to be perfect so no one could say something was holding him back or keeping him at a disadvantage. He would be a great wizard and that was with muggle parents. When Lexie stumbled on her words, Lucas accidentally let out a chuckle. It was an automatic reaction to how adorable she was when she got nervous. Still, he felt stupid for even allowing himself to get to that point. How was it that she could get him to chuckle over something so small when other girls have tried much bigger things and received nothing from him. Throughout his years at Hogwarts, Lucas had many encounters with girls, but not because he actively went looking for them. In fact, it was quiet the opposite; girls looked for him and tried to flirt wit him, only to then reveal that they needed his help with homework or needed tutoring before an exam. He always scoffed at those girls and no matter how hard they tried to look cute or sexy for him, he felt nothing; indifferent, but now, here Lexie was just stumbling on her words and Lucas thought it was completely adorable. What was wrong with him? After he chuckled, he shook his head. "It's all right. I understood what you meant." He reassured. "I don't really delve into my music hobby here at school. I find it much more relaxing and fun to do when I'm at home. It makes me feel comfortable. Besides, when I'm at school, I try to put all my attention on studying and being a better wizard." He didn't understand why he was opening up to her, but he couldn't stop himself. There was no awkward tension between them and the conversation just flowed so naturally that he just couldn't help but talk about whatever came into his mind. "Ah, yes, that is true." Lucas responded when Lexie brought up wizards writing their own music. "But in the muggle world it's so much more to it than just writing the lyrics. Making the actual music is something else as well. If a person is well off, they might have a computer at home to help with that. Though I don't have a computer at my home, I know there have been many nights where I stayed up to work on my music, whether it was writing lyrics or making the actual music itself." He admitted, slightly reminiscing back to his summer days and nights. "Anyway, I think we should also give other examples, besides music. I was thinking about the culinary arts like cooking or baking. There is a lot of hard work that goes into those fields." For some reason, after he brought up cooking, he wondered if Lexie liked to cook or bake. To him, she looked like someone who liked to bake, but that was just his assumption.

WE ARE SEARCHLIGHTS, WE CAN SEE IN THE DARK TAGS HERE Lexie couldn't help but lean forward on the desk when Lucas spoke. It could have been the chuckle which had definitely surprised her. She couldn't remember the last time he had chuckled, had he ever even chuckled before? The true surprise came from her heart skipping a beat at the sound of it. She wanted to hear it again, it had been a nice sound. Or maybe it had been the glint in his eyes as he spoke about his hobby. She couldn't help but smile at that. He had a always seemed like a reserved person, so the fact that he was talking to her about himself made her very happy... and definitely not helping the fluttering growing in her stomach.
"I understand that feeling. My adopted parents are muggles and I want to do whatever I can to help them out in the future." it was one of her largest motivators to do well. "but I'm also real sick and tired of pure-bloods saying we shouldn't even be allowed to be wizards because of our 'blood status." she scoffed, with a roll of her eyes. She did enjoy the looks on their faces when she did better than them especially when reminded of the fact that she was a hufflepuff.
It was a little mean though.
"I agree." Lexie nodded. Different examples might give them a lead over other groups. "Especially since music might be something other groups also think off." they would definitely need to think of different angles to present to the class if they didn't want to be the fifth pair to present the same information.
She couldn't help but grow excited at his idea. "Cooking is such an everyday task that everyone has to do by hand whether it's yours or whoever you are buying it from. I do love the idea of baking. It's so much more precise, graceful, and artistic than cooking is..." she sighed, thinking about all the creations she had made back home from cupcakes, to cheesecakes, to a tart. "and something I'm really good at." she beamed.
