HISTORY + MORE
Although his mother Desideria claimed that Blaise was conceived with her second husband, no one really knows for sure since she had so many husbands in her lifetime, and infinitely more admirers. In any case Blaise was raised primarily by Desideria with the temporary influence of whatever husband she had at the time. In the end, she went through seven husbands, each of which died a suspicious death and whose gold went to the beautiful and charming witch. Despite the suspicion, she was never caught or charged for anything to do with the deaths, and she was able to provide Blaise with an extravagant environment. Not that her family money alone wouldn't have let them live comfortably.
Blaise was taught from a young age about blood purity, and being Desideria's only son, he was doted upon. He got everything that he asked for and even things that he hadn't had time to consider. Desideria treated the money that she received from the deaths like it was the fun money – her family fortune was kept in a vault intended for Blaise when he came of age. In any case, her behavior gave Blaise a sense of entitlement and superiority. On his own he developed good hygiene, to the extent that he would have never been caught playing in the mud with other children or anything like that. Especially not if he was in nice clothes, and with his family's reputation, he always was.
His childhood continued on this way for quite a while, and the relationship between mother and son waxed and waned. Sometimes his mother paid too much attention to him, smothering him and being overprotective. Other times, when he achieved something that he was proud of, she didn't seem to notice. It led to Blaise being an over-achiever (though his natural intelligence didn't hurt either). The only person that he really confided in was his grandmother.
Not long before he got his letter to Hogwarts, Blaise's grandmother took a turn for the worst. She was bedridden at that point despite not being all that old. Blaise went to visit her every day that he could, and on one of the last times that he did, his grandmother gave him something peculiar for a boy to have (at least, he thought so when he was little). It was a frosted glass music box that she had made by hand after her graduation from Hogwarts. He was there when she died, and recovering from the loss of the only person he thought he could speak personally with hit him hard, and brought resolution to the decision that he didn't really want to be close to people anymore. He wouldn't remember the reason so specifically later on, but it did take hold.
Receiving the letter was nothing that amazing to Blaise. He had always known that he would attend Hogwarts. He had also always known that he would be in Slytherin house. As far as he knew, everyone in his family had been with the possible exception of his birth father. At Hogwarts, he was more interested in the classes and the atmosphere than he was in other students, and found most of them to be annoyingly energetic and outgoing anyway. He thought that some of the older students were interesting, but even they weren't really worth distracting himself from his homework. Potions and Transfiguration were always going to be more interesting to him than people were.
His years at Hogwarts went by rather uneventfully. He made friends slowly, though most of these were passive-aggressive on and off friendships that Blaise would have thrown aside if it benefited him. Something of importance did happen when he was in fourth year, though. He discovered that the grandmother he had so adored had been in Ravenclaw house. She wasn't even a Slytherin... It explained a lot of his mother's behavior. She had always seemed embarrassed by her, and closer to the older members of the family. And it explained the way that she started to treat his grandmother's personal possessions like the music box as time went on.
Blaise is going into his fifth year now, not changed in the least on the outside from what he was before. However, to his great annoyance, much of his summer was spent indoors because his mother was paranoid that the Death Eaters were out and about again and might do harm to her precious son.
RP SAMPLE
Blaise was writing in a small black book in the common room. From time to time when he'd used this book there had been comments from his housemates about it. He still wasn't entirely sure what the joke was, but he ignored it either way so that didn't matter. In reality, it was a simple journal. Most wouldn't expect that he was the type, and for a long time, they would have been right. He had started the practice of writing in a journal only the year before, and it was more a place to organize his thoughts than to spill the secrets of his heart. He wasn't quite that idiotic.
And the way that he wrote was to address his deceased grandmother. It was the only way to coax out thoughts that normally he'd leave hidden there. When he thought about speaking with her about things, it came easier. Much easier than the letters that he wrote to his mother...
He sighed audibly as he looked at the things that he'd been writing. Early in the year, things were so simple. Then they had spiraled out of control. How did that happen? Funnily enough, of everyone and everything that he could blame, he pointed that blame to his mother, and his mother alone. She was the one that got him into an arranged engagement. She was the one that made him all crazy and confused in his head. No wonder he couldn't write anything to her that wasn't just angry words.
He flipped through the journal, then closed it and rested his arm over it. More people were coming in from class, and he didn't particularly want anyone to read what he'd written. Even though it felt like everyone knew most of his secrets already... Damn this school.
