Susan is from a long line of respected witches and wizards that have been against the Dark Arts. Many of her family members died during the first wizarding war, including her aunt, uncle, and cousins. She was born in the midst of the chaos, and protected by her mother's side of the family which was made up mostly of muggles. It was safer to hide her away there rather than leave her in the magical world. Her parents continued their fight against the Death Eaters and made it through the war. In this small way Susan was able to have a relatively normal childhood. She was close with her aunt Amelia, too, who would help her with basic education before she was sent off to Hogwarts.
She was sorted into Hufflepuff house, where she made friends with most of the people in her year. Although shy, she made friends quite easily, and not just in her own house... For the most part, she didn't care what house someone was from, or their blood status, or what their family believed in, as long as they were decent people. When she'd meet people who were prejudiced she would try to find out why, and if they held fast to their beliefs, would not waste more time with them than necessary.
She has thrived at Hogwarts, but ever since the Dark Lord has seemingly returned, she has to wonder whether or not her family will be hunted down again. She managed to convince her parents that she wanted to go back to school, noting that if she didn't get a proper magical education, she wouldn't be able to defend herself. Learning defensive and offensive spells is on the top of her priority list, and she intends on following in the footsteps of her predecessors if the time comes.

Susan sat on the edge of her bed, flipping through each of her textbooks for the new year in turn. She wasn't really concentrating on the contents. In fact, she couldn't concentrate on anything at all. But if she stopped moving she knew that it would hurt twice as much, that everything would come back in higher definition. She had filled the past few weeks with letters to friends, pretending that everything was okay. But... when she was by herself, how could she pretend? Everything was at stake now.
She remembered all the students gathered together to say their goodbyes to Cedric Diggory. She hadn't known him all that well, but he'd been her housemate, and someone that she looked up to. Remembering him just laughing or playing quidditch or dancing at the ball.... It was all so difficult. But there was more to it than that. She'd wondered if people had taken comfort in each other when her family had died. Her uncle, his children, his wife... And it was what finally broke her, leaving her in painful sobs.
Could it be true that the Dark Lord was back? If so, this would just be the first of many casualties. She was realist enough to understand that. And it would be nothing short of a miracle if her family was unscathed this time around. She pushed the thoughts down deeper, telling herself that maybe Harry was crazy and it was all just an accident.
